SloPig Pop Up Oktoberfest Dinner

Last night I enjoyed Oktoberfest Spanferkel, a traditional Bavarian pig roast buffet, hosted by SloPig at the Malt House (“Madison’s craft beer oasis”). I heard about the event at the last minute from a colleague, who happened to have an extra ticket.

SloPig, the brainchild of Chef Dan Fox (Madison Club) and Chad Vogel (bartender at Maduro), is dedicated to celebrating heritage pigs. I attended their first event, Slow Pig Madison, at the Madison Club about a year ago. Apparently the duo will soon be opening a new restaurant in Madison, Fox and Bird, and if last night’s dinner is any indication of what’s to come, Madison is in for a big treat.

It was the ultimate Oktoberfest feast—roast suckling pig, herb spƤtzle, sauerkraut and sausages, assorted pickles, caramelized apples, gourmet mustards, and artisanal breads. I couldn’t help myself but go back for seconds. Did I mention that tickets for the meal were only $15? Fittingly, the Malt House has a great selection of interesting Oktoberfest brews on tap—Ayinger Oktoberfest, Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier, Hofbrau Oktoberfestbier, New Belgium Red Hoptober, Erdinger Oktoberfest Weizen, and the local Capital Oktoberfest.

We grabbed Ayingers, found seats at one of the picnic tables on the outdoor patio, and ate up while listening to music from interactive acoustic band, the Swing Crew duo. What a meal. It was a good night, and a great way to celebrate Oktoberfest in Madison.
